EMMETT, Idaho – Mosquitoes caught in traps in Gem County last week have been tested positive for West Nile virus, local district mosquito control officials said Monday.
According to the district, two samples tested positive for the disease during the week of July 15th.
"This indicates that there is a West Nile virus in some mosquitoes in the area and corresponds to what the neighboring counties have already determined during the 2019 mosquito season," said Jason Kinley, district director of wrestling. against the mosquitoes of Gem County. "Since the mosquitoes in the [district] tested, it is important that citizens take precautions to protect themselves from mosquitoes. "
West Nile virus has already been confirmed in several neighboring counties, including Canyon and Elmore counties.

Officials say you can avoid West Nile virus by following three steps to avoid mosquito bites:
- Empty stagnant water from your property that may produce mosquitoes.
- Dress appropriately by wearing long sleeves and pants when you are outside.
- Defend against mosquitoes using an insect repellent at DEET.
Kinley said it was important that every resident of Gem County know about West Nile virus and know how to protect themselves from the disease.
"We can all take steps to reduce mosquito habitat around our homes and adopt simple practices to minimize exposure to mosquito bites," he said.
The abatement district continues its misting operations to reduce the number of mosquitoes, especially around the stagnant water areas where insects are most prevalent.
