In December 2015, New York Giants star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. started a series of altercations on the field with Carolina Panthers cornerback Jason Norman, which culminated in a helmet confrontation that led Beckham to a suspension of a match. According to Beckham and the Giants, the conflict between Beckham and Norman was initiated by Norman who physically threatened Beckham Jr. with a baseball bat and threw homophobic slurs before the match began.
After this altercation, speculation about Beckham exploded, mostly on black gossip sites.
In a new interview, GQ asked Beckham, who is now a receiver for the Cleveland Browns, how he felt that he felt constantly treated as being closed or "excited" when he was seen on a spa photo with one of his teammates.
Beckham said, "I have never had the opportunity to talk about that. Honestly was not offended. I have never had a single problem with someone with their own personal life. I have friends who are gay. It was almost funnier for me. I almost played with them even more. It's like giving me an ultimatum, I usually always go in the opposite direction of what you want me to do. So when they say that, I would do them almost worse. I have no problem with anyone's badual orientation. "
GQ added, "I feel like such messages only contribute to homophobia in the black community. The idea that someone is gay – or that being gay is somehow ashamed – because they dance or have blond hair seems so small. "
Beckham replied, "Or because they are" close to other men ". Even as little videos where they see me leaning back or something, they will say that I look at a guy's bad. And I'm like, 'Bro! You do not even know where my mind is. It was just a losing game. They saw me with a white woman and said, "Why not be with sisters? no problem with any race. Love is the love. If you are attracted to someone, you are attracted to someone. There was such a stigma built, [as though] I do not like my own women. It's like, no, I do not like anyone who bothers me.[[[[Laughs]"
