Wagner Electric was a company based on the principle that the future was with AC.
"The problem with DC is that it will kill you very quickly and AC power is a much better option." said Dr. Robert Archibald.
Their first location was a storefront to the 18th and Olive. He grew quickly, as did the size of his products. Which later included the transformers.
"Wagner Electric survived the depression and continued into the 1950s and 60s. Believe it or not, Studebaker Corporation eventually bought them.They still exist as a subsidiary of another larger company, but their product line extends electric motors and materials badociated with the auto parts. " said Dr. Robert Archibald of the Missouri History Museum.
By the late 1930s, Wagner employed 5,000 people. Emerson Electric, based in St. Louis, also started with small electric motors. Wagner and Emerson owned many factories and did business around the world.
Unlike Emerson, who has long bought other companies, Wagner was at the other end of this proposition. But, his new owners have decided to keep the familiar name of Wagner.
