Apple is asking the Trump administration to exclude tariffs from its Mac Pro desktop parts, as had been reported by Bloomberg.
Apple filed a series of applications for exemption from the US Trade Representative's Office (first made public on July 18), asking the government to exempt a series of specific products from a US-based company. proposed tariff of 25% on products imported from China. The rates have not yet been fully implemented, but the plan would include electronics, which could severely affect the bottom line of tech companies like Apple.
Documents do not mention the Mac Pro directly, but Bloomberg note that the parts described seem to be designed for the desktop. The listed components include a CPU heatsink, a graphics processor, and a frame and a computer case. Apple also requests the exclusion of some of its accessories, including Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2.
The Mac Pro was the last Apple device badembled in the United States, but in June, the the Wall Street newspaper announced that the company was considering moving the manufacturing sector to China. Apple's request will now go into a period of public comment before the agency decides whether to grant exclusions.
The Trump administration used technology imports as currency during negotiations with China, a plan that could be costly to large technology companies in the country. The administration had previously set up 10% tariffs on some parts of the product, although Apple was finally able to avoid rates on devices such as Apple Watch and AirPods.
Several companies, including Apple and Microsoft, have already raised concerns with the US Trade Representative about pricing. In a report filed last month, Apple said the new tariffs "would result in a reduction in Apple's economic contribution to the US" and "would tip the balance in favor of our global competitors."
