According to Eye Radio, South Sudan's president, Salva Kiir, banned people from signing the national anthem during public events if he was not present.

"The hymn is not made for everyone," said Minister of Information, Michael Makuei. He reportedly mentioned cases where the anthem was sung during events attended by young officials – such as "under-secretaries and governors" – to honor their presence.

"For the information of all, the national anthem is intended only for the president, and the functions that he badists," said the private information website quoted by M Makuei.

South Sudan is the newest country in the world, formed in 2011, and its anthem was written the previous year by a collective of 49 poets.
