Real Madrid fears that Marco Asensio will lose the entire 2019-20 season after he has torn the knee ligaments during the preparatory match against Arsenal.
The Spanish international faced a benign challenge with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the second half of the showdown between the International Champions Cup in Washington and scored for Los Blancos moments before.
A tense Asensio was taken on a stretcher and immediately drove to the hospital, leaving Chief Zinedine Zidane to admit his concerns to the 23-year-old.
"We are a bit worried (on the part of Asensio)," Zidane admitted. "It's the knee." He went straight to the hospital to get tested and see, but it looks bad.
"It's the bad thing of the day for us, because we're losing a player and we're a bit touched, yes."
Madrid medical staff have not yet revealed the extent of Asensio's injuries, but a number of Spanish reports have confirmed that the initial scans revealed a rupture of the ACL in the left knee, which meant that the young ex-Mallorca could be absent for the season.
Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane insisted that the injury would make no difference to Gareth Bale's future, which he still wants to leave.
After the match, questions were asked as to whether this could offer Dani Ceballos a way back into the Madrid squad. The Spanish star under 21 is about to make a loan from the Gunners.
Asked about the injury of Asensio, Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, said: "I do not know, in fact, our goal in the match was not to take injuries and they may have a big injury with Asensio, it's bad news for them and also for us.
"I do not know if it can change anything."
