Marcel Keizer, coach of Sporting, admits that the club will have difficulty replacing the "quality" of Bruno Fernandes if Manchester United completes the contract of the midfielder.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperately needs a central midfielder, identifying Newcastle's Fernandes and Sean Longstaff as key targets early in the summer.
The Red Devils are preparing an offer in the region of £ 50 million for Fernandes, but Sporting president Frederico Varandas has warned that this figure is far from their badessment of the 24-year-old.
PSG, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City have also been linked to the Portuguese international in recent weeks.

The sport has been very active in the transfer market, hiring five players since the beginning of the window, and their manager, Keizer, is satisfied with the club's relationship so far.
"For me, they can close the window. That would be enough for me, "said Keizer.
But all teams see what happens to new players and possible recruits.
"We want to keep the best, but we are in the market, we are not in a position to keep everyone."
Asked about the prospect of Fernandes leaving, Keizer replied: "It depends on who will enter if Fernandes leaves.
"Quality players like these can not be replaced."
The young Argentinian Thiago Almada, aged 18, is considering replacing Fernandes and Keizer has refused to rule out a midfield move from Velez Sarsfield.
"I like good players. Almada? Maybe, he says.
Fernandes, who is part of the Sporting team in New York before their clash with Liverpool, admits he wants to get a transfer to the Premier League this summer.
"It's the president who decides, not me," he told the airport before their flight to the United States.
"I do not care about the market, I've talked about it a few times. The only thing I can do now is that I need to catch the plane so I do not miss it.

"This will be the last game of Sporting? I do not know, it's the coach who decides.
"I told you I'd like to play in England, but that's not what I'm interested in. Maybe it's when the club decides.
