The 4th Ghana Mango Week was held in Accra from 15 to 19 July 2019 under the theme "Ghana's Green Gold – Opportunities for Adding Value".

The week-long event was organized by the Federation of Ghanaian Exporters Associations (FAGE) with support from the Market-Oriented Agriculture Program (GIZ-MOAP).

The first day was marked by the official opening of the event and the exhibition of personalities of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoTI), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Ghana Industries Association (AGI), the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Ghana Agribusiness Chamber Ghana, Association of Winners of the Ghana Farmers and Fishermen's Award (NFFAWAG). Representatives from the European Union, the Embbady of Germany and a wide range of private sector stakeholders also paid tribute to this opportunity.

The second, third and fourth days were devoted to seminars on various topics of interest to the mango value chain. The presentations were presented by national and international resource persons in the chosen fields. In parallel with the seminars, about 50 companies and public institutions presented the different products and services during an exhibition.

On the last day of Mango Week, participants visited a packing shop and two major processing companies (Blue Skies and HPW). As part of Mango Week, FAGE organized regional study tours for Sunyani, Tamale and Somanya schoolchildren, on farms and processing facilities in the respective regions.

As a result of these deliberations and constructive and fruitful exchanges, the participants of the 4th Manga Week in Ghana agreed on the following points:

• We commend the government for its efforts to promote the mango industry through initiatives such as Plant for Export and Rural Development (PERD) and A District – A Factory (1D1F) ).

Production

• We urge the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ask the PPRSD to collaborate with the Mango Roundtable and other badociations to prepare a dossier on the self-imposed protocols that guarantee the required quality, to be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. European Union before September 1, 2019 to avoid the export restrictions of fresh produce. fruits and vegetables.

• We urge the relevant authorities to put in place the necessary systems to certify and monitor nursery operators to ensure the provision of clean and healthy planting material.

• We are committed to applying good agricultural practices in mango farms, particularly with regard to pest and disease management (BBS, fruit fly, anthracnose, etc.).

• We are asking for appropriate products for value chain financing from financial institutions allowing farmers to invest in better farming practices.

• We urge the government to put in place appropriate support mechanisms to fight the threat of the bacterial black spot (BBS) that threatens to destroy the industry. The government could consider the possibility of working through ECOWAS to fight the BBS at the regional level.

• We urge the government, in partnership with the private sector, to set up a consortium of research institutions specializing in research on various problems in the mango sector and allocate the necessary funds for this sector.

• We ask research institutes to carry out applied research in close collaboration with mango badociations and processors to identify other varieties that could extend the harvest period in Ghana and adapted to different varieties. mango products. Research should also take into account the effect of different agro-ecological and agro-climatic conditions on the different varieties as well as the production seasons.

• We highlight the important role of standards at the producer level (eg GlobalG.A.P. and Ghana Green Label) and processors (eg HACCP) to ensure product quality and access the market.

• We recognize the important role of pollinators in ensuring agricultural biodiversity and generating additional income.

• We are committed to reducing post-harvest losses by better coordinating the timing of flower induction and harvest in the different mango growing areas.

Processing

• We are committed to following the GlobalG.A.P. & Ghana Green Label, the best practice for sorting and grading mangoes harvested in different market segments (fresh produce exports, local processed products, fresh local produce).

• We understand that a regional perspective is necessary for processors to be able to stock mangoes throughout the year.

• We urge all stakeholders to introduce local and international innovations in treatment equipment that can improve the effectiveness of treatment.

• We recognize that it is important to reduce waste by focusing on the total use of commodities for mango.

• We call on all stakeholders to innovate in product development to stimulate local value creation for mango.

• We urge local and international equipment manufacturers to produce processing equipment that meets the strict hygiene standards in force in the food processing industry.

• We highlight the importance of eco-friendly packaging materials.

• We are calling for more appropriate funding mechanisms to set up or modernize treatment facilities.

Marketing

• We reiterate the need to make informed decisions when entering the mango sector, for example: through the market badysis study of different mango products.

• We recognize Ghana's current strengths (fresh and dried cuts) and potential opportunities (mashed potatoes, fresh fruit, …) for various mango-based products in international markets (EU, US, Middle East).

• We recognize the need for further market research on regional and continental opportunities, particularly in the context of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Free Zone. African Continental Exchange (AfCFTA).

• We recognize the opportunities of the organic market and the current challenges of the Ghanaian mango sector to enter.

Organizational configuration

• We are committed to strengthening the collaboration of farmers under the umbrella of badociations and within the new horticultural authority.

• We are committed to promoting the participation of women entrepreneurs in the mango sector, both in production and processing and in the provision of inputs and services.

• We are committed to better presenting the opportunities of the mango sector to young people.
