Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh
Ghana's Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, said there was only one legitimate vice-chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) – Father Abbot Anthony Afful-Broni .
"I can say without hesitation that there is only one vice-chancellor in the ETS. If this country wants to follow this path, someone can flee somewhere and come and sit down very soon at Jubilee House and say, "I am the president." There is only one legitimate and legitimate vice-chancellor, Reverend Afful-Broni. Anyone who does not understand must follow the legal process, "said Prempeh during the Meet The Press series in Accra on Wednesday, July 24, 2019.
"We will not accept such things. I am rather surprised that the police did not charge the intruders because even if you are [V-C]you have to make sure that you are there. You can not run into a school and sit on a chair and say you're a V-C, it's not easy like that. You must follow a process. You can challenge the process, you can go to court and even if you win, it must be executed and all this through legal means, we are not in a state without laws, "said Dr. Prempeh.
Mr. Prempeh's comments are based on attempts by Professor Mawutor Avoke, the ousted V-C, to resume his duties.
It is recalled that Professor Avoke and five other members of the academic staff were temporarily put in default for alleged offenses with financial malfeasance and functions. After investigation by the Office of the Fight against Organized and Economic Crime (EOCO), Professor Avoke and the others were found innocent and were acquitted of the charges for which they were dismissed.
On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Professor Avoke and the fired staff stormed the university to take over from the current V-C.
Police were called to prevent confrontation when tension mounted on campus.
Meanwhile, UTAG-UEW is divided on the issue. One group supported Professor Avoke's return while the other described his actions as "scandalous".
