(CNN) – An emotionally supported dog bit an American Airlines flight attendant on Monday, causing an injury requiring five stitches.
The incident occurred on flight 3506 from Dallas to Greensboro, North Carolina, operated by its partner Envoy Air, said American Airlines.
The medical staff examined the attendant when the plane arrived. He did not need treatment and was allowed to return to Dallas / Fort Worth, where he received five stitches, the airline said.
American Airlines did not specify the type of dog involved.
"What happened yesterday on the American Airlines flight is totally unacceptable and inexcusable," said the flight attendants union in a statement released Tuesday. "For years, AFA has been supporting the role that trained animals can offer cabin pbadengers, but we have also called for action with respect to setting standards for emotional support animals."
American Airlines updated its policy on emotionally-supported animals in March. For badistance animals, the airline allows dogs, cats and miniature horses. The emotionally supported animals must be dogs or cats.
Pbadengers wishing to embark an emotionally supported animal must provide a veterinary medical form and information on vaccination.
