Many actors and actresses in the Ashanti region, led by Nana Ama McBrown, on Wednesday urged the Ghanaian parliament to ensure that a film village was built in Kumasi, in the heart of Ghanaian cinema (Kumawood), rather than in the Kyebi, eastern region. .

Nana Ama McBrown told Major-General Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu when presenting the petition to Parliament, that the influence of Kumawood actors and actresses on the socio-economic well-being of Ghanaians could be underestimated, hence the need to build the Film Village in Kumasi.

"We play a very important role in the film industry in Ghana," she said, adding, "We have employed more Ghanaians in our business."

"For this reason, we ask Parliament to ensure that the film village is set up in the Ashanti region.

Receiving the petition on behalf of the Parliament, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu badured the petitioners that their concerns would be conveyed to the Speaker of Parliament so that appropriate measures could be taken in this regard.

He acknowledged the important role that film producers and actors play in the economy and commended them for their efforts.

The government of Ghana plans to build a film village for the country, which will be located in the eastern region.

The government's 2019 budget stated: "The government has acquired 200 acres of land in the eastern region to build a movie village".
