Area Minister Elizabeth Naa Afoley Quaye, who announced this information in an interview, added that the banning of industrial fishing by trawler was part of initiatives to rebuild the declining stock of fish in the country's territorial waters. .

She added that sufficient monitoring mechanisms had been put in place to ensure compliance with the ban.

Ms. Quaye explained that the Ghanaian Navy and Maritime Police were ready to intervene and had already installed tracking devices on authorized fishing vessels. A ministry surveillance team, backed by local fishermen, was also looking for trawlers to contravene the order.

This year's closed season for small-scale fishers began on May 15, 2019 and ended on June 15, 2019.
