Accra, July 24, GNA – The Ministry of
Education has sworn a board of directors of 15 members of the University of Mines
and technology (UMaT) to ensure the implementation of the objectives of the
University.
Dr. Stephen Saforo Yirenkyi, is President
for the Council with Professor J.S.Y Kuma, Vice-Chancellor, as well as
Kofi Osei-Afoakwa, Martin Koduah, Francis Aboagye-Otchere and Dr.
Mrs. Helen Michelle K. Essandoh, all appointed by the government.
Other members: Mr. Victor Amangu Yanney,
CHASS, Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah and Mr. Lewis Brew, both convened
(Professor), Ms. Joyce Laryea, Senior Official, Mr. Paul K. Mensah, Junior Staff,
Mr. Stephen Kofi Ndede, Alumni, Ms. Margaret Ekua Amosah, RSC (Acting), Mr.
Jacob Atewin Abaare, GRASAG and Mr. Sulemanu Koney, Ghana Chamber of Mines.
Professor Kwesi Yankah, Minister of State
for tertiary education, swearing them to charge them with finding viable solutions
solutions to the identified problems and not just identify them.
"The solutions you would propose should be
those who would ultimately help the University achieve its goal and provide
expanded access to high quality science education, "he said, adding
would contribute significantly to absorbing the higher number of high schools (SHS)
graduates who would soon be witnesses because of the Free SHS.

determine a strategic direction for the University and determine the allocation
appropriate use of funds and ensure the creation of an environment of equal opportunity.

The Minister declared UMaT, Tarkwa Act-2004 (Act
677) instructed the University to provide higher education through teaching and
search for qualified people who are able to benefit from such
education.

improve science learning in the country.
Professor Yankah urged them to establish
strategic partnerships with international institutions with similar mandates and
for the University to benefit from international best practices and

Dr. Yirenkyi in his acceptance speech thanked
government for trust rested in them, saying, they would do their best
elevate the image of the University.
The President expressed the hope that the students
population that was 2,500 students would be doubled by the end of 2020 with
the ration of adequate staff.
He stated that the new school site was to be
developed before its encroachment, adding that the land donated to the school
by the leaders lay there undeveloped even though it was at a strategic
location.
Dr. Yirenkyi stated that funds were needed to
realize their dreams, otherwise they could not do anything.
He advised members not to be complacent
their new appointment, but work harder to improve their best.
