He was injured in the first match of Liverpool against Borussia Dortmund in South Bend, but the extent of the damage did not appear until a few days later.

Clyne went with her team to their second game in Boston, where the reduced swelling exposed the serious damage.

The 28-year-old returned to Merseyside on Monday night while the rest of Liverpool's tour team arrived in New York.

Commenting on Clyne's injury, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told liverpoolfc.com, "What can I say except how much we are all upset about Clyney?

Liverpool boss Klopp said he and the players were "empty of nerves" for Clyne

"He trained and played so well – he was in excellent shape.

"Obviously, an injury of this nature is not a happy moment for any player, but the good thing is that, according to the doctors, it is a single injury of the ACL. This means that repairing it and returning it should follow a path free of pitfalls and complications.

"At the moment, there is not much more to say that we will all support Clyney in every way possible and look forward to seeing him on the ground as soon as possible.

"He's a very good professional and he's naturally very fit and strong, so it's all in his favor."

Her injury also puts Clyne in any doubt at the beginning of her rehab process.

He stays one year at Clyne in Liverpool, who was in talks with a number of clubs on a possible transfer.

The Crystal Palace, where Clyne began his career, intended to name him the ideal substitute for Manchester United player Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Clyne joined Liverpool from Southampton for £ 12 million in 2015, signing a five-year contract.

He missed most of the 2017/18 season because of a persistent back injury, but had a successful loan period in Bournemouth during the second half of last season.

The Reds play their last game in the United States against Sporting Lisbon at Yankee Stadium in New York Thursday morning at 1:05.
