Ms. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, Minister of Fisheries, said the department had identified three priority areas: aquaculture, fisheries and infrastructure to transform the sector and integrate it into the overall national agenda.

She said the ministry is working hard to improve the sector in order to avoid heavy post-harvest losses and to meet export standards, as well as to raise the standard of living of the region's inhabitants. .

The Axim landing site project, which began in 2007, was still not completed.

The completion of the site would help improve fishing activities, ensure the hygienic handling of fish and provide adequate storage facilities, while reinforcing values.

It would also provide a point of exchange for participatory activities and decision-making in the value chain.

Ms. Afoley Quaye stated that the incentives would stimulate private sector involvement in aquaculture through many extension services provided to the population. "It is envisaged that such incentives would improve aquaculture and eliminate bad fishing practices".

She said the Ministry and the Fisheries Commission would continue to rely on fishermen to enforce the closure of the season, saying "we are protecting marine resources".

Mr. Kweku Ofori Asiamah, Minister of Transport, commended the government's commitment to the project and said that the government is keeping the promise to build mini-ports to carry out fishing activities.

Asiamah said that the commissioning of the landing site of Axim, the eleventh landing site of the coast, would help more than 10% of the population engaged in the sector, adding that the potential of the industry required that a great deal of attention be given to this.

"This mini port will have among other things a manger, a cold room and a market".

He therefore urged the community to take responsibility for the project as stakeholders and to keep an eye on the specifications for successful completion.
