It can not be worse in the center

Arsenal is in a total mess at the back. But as this can not get worse, why not throw Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Dinos Mavropanos into the fray?

The pre-season tour of the United States has taught us a lot about the Arsenal team. From budding young players entering the team to the finesse of the attackers to the amazing and surprising work of Mesut Ozil, there is a lot to be gained from what has been a relatively productive summer tour. However, there was also a blatant negative, something that was not particularly unexpected.

Defensively, Arsenal again seemed extremely suspicious. Shkodran Mustafi was at its peak, Sokratis was sent off against Real Madrid, while Nacho Monreal, Sead Kolasinac, Granite Xhaka and Ainsley Maitland-Niles all struggled to perform their defensive duties. Sometimes it became ugly.

And all of this comes after club captain Laurent Koscielny refused to travel with the team as he planned to prepare for an outing. Despite all the controversy surrounding Koscielny, he was the best central defender of the team last season. And this week, Unai Emery talked about the return to London and the inclusion of Koscielny:

It seems that we have found ourselves in a dead end.

And that leaves Arsenal in an extremely central position in the center of the back. At present, they have two senior starters, one of whom is Mustafi, and a central defender turned left who can not be used at the heart of a group of four. The only three viable options available to them are still relatively young and inexperienced: the flourishing triumvirate of Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Dinos Mavropanos, who all seem to have been compared to each other throughout their stay at the club.

I do not know which of these is best prepared to be used as a weekly starter. I do not know if there is one, although Holding has certainly promised before his injury last season and that Chambers has not been named Fulham's season player for nothing. I do not know who is the most talented and I certainly do not know if any of them have the capacity to be a long-term solution to Arsenal's oldest and most problematic problem.

But I know I would like to know. I would like to see what these players have. Can they take on the responsibility of anchoring each week one of the top six women defenders? Do they have the skill and mentality of being an elite advocate for the rest of their careers? This season could provide answers to these questions.

And for those who are worried about what might happen to the center back position if you entrust it to three extremely inexperienced and unproven players, can this get worse? The arsenals are already so poor at the position that might as well take a risk, if only to see what they have in unknown products.

Central back options are ridiculously poor. Emery, I'm sure, will curse the group of positions throughout the coming season. So, if this can not be worse, why not see what you have among those that could be long-term solutions? It's about time that Arsenal and Emery take risks.
