The Sudanese army on Wednesday announced it has arrested a general and several others for a foiled coup attempt announced earlier this month.
"General Hashim Abdel Mottalib, chief of staff and officers of the National Intelligence and Security Service, will top the list," said the army in a statement.
"The leaders of Islamist movements and the Party of the National Congress" of the deposed leader Omar al-Bashir were also arrested, announced the army in a statement.
On July 11, the army announced that she had foiled an attempted coup without specifying when.
At that time, 12 officers, including five retired, were reportedly arrested and security forces searched for the brain.
On Wednesday, the army said that those arrested for the coup attempt were being interrogated and would be brought to justice.
They are accused of "trying to help bring back the regime of the former National Congress party," according to the army statement.
General Mohamed Othman al-Hussein, the new Chief of Chiefs of Staff, also announced the details of the arrests on state television.
The coup attempt occurred when the ruling military council, which took power after Bashir was ousted in April, negotiated a power-sharing agreement with the leaders of the protest to form a joint civil-military governing body.
The agreement was signed on July 17, but the two sides have not yet resolved some key outstanding issues, including the responsibility of protesters killed during months of protests.
