Magistrate orders medical treatment for suspect in Tema murder case

The TDC District Court in Tema asked the investigator in the murder case of Ms. Josephine Asante, Marketing and Public Affairs Officer of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA), to ensure that the One of the suspects is duly informed of medical attention as a result of an badault that he has suffered at the hands of cellmates.

Ms. Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong also ordered the police to investigate the mistreatment of the suspect, Christian Adjei, by cellmates.

Adjei is currently in custody at the Nima Police Station.

The investigation was given after Adjei's lawyer informed the court that the suspect had nearly lost his life after being ill-treated in detention by some of the cell's inmates.

Vomiting blood

Mr. Isaac Eshun, who pleaded for Mr. Baba Jamal, informed the court that two weeks ago his client was beaten and caused vomiting.

He added that following a distress call from the suspect's mother, he had had to urgently call the investigator to arrange for the transfer of the suspect to the police hospital. .

The magistrate said that the life of the suspect was paramount, adding that the court could not try a deceased person and that the prosecution should therefore ensure the welfare of Adjei in prison.

The investigator, who was in court, informed the magistrate that the detainees in the cell, who had beaten the suspect, had been relocated to another cell.

During the case's appeal last Monday, the prosecutor, Inspector Beatrice Ayeh, said the investigations were still ongoing.

Mr. Eshun complained that the prosecution had unduly delayed the case, considering that it was impossible for him to tell the court the state of progress of the investigation and the date of the investigation. when the case would be referred to the Attorney General's Office.

In response to a magistrate's investigation into police investigations, Ayeh said the duplicate file would be sent to the Attorney General's office within one month. The case was therefore postponed until August 8, 2019.

Context

Ms. Asante was murdered on January 13, 2019 at her home in EMEFS Estates, near Afienya, Greater Accra Region.

Two people, Amos Apeku, his personal driver, and Christian Adjei, a servant, appear before the Tema TDC Court of First Instance following the death of the former director of marketing and public relations at GPHA.

Apeku was released on bail by the High Court of Accra while Adjei is in custody.
