The Sudanese army on Wednesday announced it has arrested a general and several others for a foiled coup attempt announced earlier this month.
"General Hashim Abdel Mottalib, chief of staff and officers of the National Intelligence and Security Service, will top the list," said the army in a statement.
"The leaders of Islamist movements and the Party of the National Congress" of the deposed leader Omar al-Bashir were also arrested, announced the army in a statement.
On July 11, the army announced that she had foiled an attempted coup without specifying when.
At that time, 12 officers, including five retired, were reportedly arrested and security forces searched for the brain.
On Wednesday, the army said that those arrested for the coup attempt were being interrogated and would be brought to justice.
They are accused of "trying to help bring back the regime of the former National Congress party," according to the army statement.
General Mohamed Othman al-Hussein, the new Chief of Chiefs of Staff, also announced the details of the arrests on state television.
The ruling military council in Sudan, which took power after the overthrow of Bashir in April, said last month they thwarted "more than one coup attempt", with several officers being arrested .
The latest alleged coup d'etat attempt came just a week after the ruling generals signed a power-sharing agreement with the leaders of the protest to form a joint civil-military governing body.
The agreement was signed on July 17, but the two sides still have not resolved some key issues, including justice for protesters killed during months of protests.
According to doctors linked to the protest movement, some 246 people have been killed in demonstrations-related violence since the beginning of demonstrations in December against the Bashir regime.
Of those killed, 127 died on 3 June when armed men in military uniforms violently dispersed a week – long protest camp in front of army headquarters in Khartoum.
The ruling generals have denied ordering the dispersal, which triggered an international scandal.
