In a speech on his behalf, Mahama congratulated the late president, saying that Ghana owed him all his gratitude for his commitment, dedication and selfless service to the nation.
He said the commitment of the late president for peace in the country was a unique attribute that earned him the title "Asomdweehene".

"Many people described the late president as a reluctant politician, but he was the kind of leader the country needed," he said.
Ms. Sherry Ayitey, a former minister of state, also praised the late Professor Mills for his distinct political ideology, based on the fact that power belongs to the people.
"In conforming to this ideology, Professor Mills did everything possible to meet the demands of those whom he served," she added, saying that her political career had been a success.
Context
On July 24, 2012, shockwaves crossed the country when the news was reported that Professor Mills, aged three years and six months after his four-year term, had died at the Military Hospital.
His remains were buried at Asomdwee Park, near Christianborg Castle in Osu, Accra.
The park would eventually have been ruined and this has caused concern, especially the family of the late president, who has threatened to exhume the remains to reinvest in his hometown, Otuam , in the central region.
At the ceremony yesterday, however, the Daily Graphic found that rehabilitation work had been done on the park, which had been painted and weeds had been removed.
The place had also been kept clean and tidy.
