The Asante-Akim Southern Municipal Assembly distributed 150,000 hybrid cocoa plants to farmers with the aim of increasing the yield and improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers in the region. municipality.
The exercise, which was part of the implementation of the program Plantation for Export and Rural Development (PERD) in the municipality, was overseen by the Director General of the Municipality (MCE), Mr. Alexander Frimpong.
About 400 beneficiary farmers also received 30,000 tree seedlings to plant alongside cocoa plants to protect their farms and mitigate the effects of climate change.
According to Mr. Frimpong, each farmer would plant eight trees per acre of cocoa plantation and it was expected that more trees would be planted as more farmers would benefit from the program.
It is a collaboration agreement between the Assembly, the Forestry Commission (CF), the Department of Agriculture, COCOBOD and Kuapa Kokoo Limited.
Six strategically located sites in Dampong, Atwedie, Odubi, Komeso, Tokwai-Odumase and Obogu have been designated as nursery sites for cocoa plants and trees.
The MCE said that the Assembly has decided to partner with other stakeholders this year to have an impact not only on the lives of farmers, but also on the environment.
He added that the CF had released 65 of its afforestation workers to support the nursery of tree seedlings, integrated into the environmental protection exercise.
He stressed the need for farmers to grow trees in the same way as cocoa, saying that they would not only protect their investments but that they would have the opportunity to reap economic benefits in the near future.
The MCE recounted how the impact of climate change had destroyed many buildings during rainstorms in the municipality over the years and had prompted farmers and other citizens to cultivate the habit of planting trees. .
He added that the government had put in place the PERD program to make farming more lucrative, and urged farmers, especially young people, to join this program to improve their lives.
He announced that nearly 300,000 cocoa plants would be badfed next year and urged farmers who had not yet benefited from it to be patient. The leaders of the different communities congratulated the government for its commendable intervention and urged the badembly to increase the number of seedlings intended for a larger number of farmers.
