Manbadeh Azure Awuni
Manbadeh Azure Awuni, a journalist with the Multimedia group, based in Accra, urged the Akufo-Addo government to emulate former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), opposing the opposition, to take revenge on people highlighting the ills of his government.
The investigative journalist also urged the current government to draw lessons from former president John Kufuor, who, he said, has created an environment conducive to media practice in Ghana.
Mr. Awuni, who commented on the recent wave of attacks by journalists, including the death threats that forced him to be exiled to South Africa following the broadcast of his documentary on the alleged activities of a group of militia of the ruling Osu Castle – a claim denied by the government and rejected by the National Media Commission (NMC) – told Accra100.5FM Thursday, July 25, 2019 that : "If you look at the general media landscape, beyond me, if you switch from one radio station to another television station or TV channel to another and you ask reporters, they will tell you that the current atmosphere is a little too hostile towards the journalist ".
"The government is suppressing the freedom of the press and journalists are complaining a lot," he said.
According to him, during the presidency of Mr. Mahama, despite the many criticisms he had addressed to him, the president of the time took everything calmly and gently.
"He was very accommodating and I can tell you that Mr. Mahama is not vindictive. Journalists were therefore free to do what we had to do without fear or favor. "
Mr. Awuni therefore begged the Akufo-Addo government to learn from his predecessors.
He said that journalists could not be "singers of praise" from a government, but rather ask for accounts.
