As part of the activities marking the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in America, the Government of Ghana launched the "Year of return, Ghana 2019".
The announcement included the promise of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to confer citizenship to 200 members of the African-American diaspora group currently living in the Caribbean.
This initiative aims to encourage African Americans and the black diaspora to return to the country where their ancestors have been kidnapped and enslaved, allowing them to reap the full benefits of being Ghanaians.

Ghana is the only country in the 21st century that has legally offered to resettle people of African descent in Africa.
In 2000, Ghana became the first African country to officially open its doors to people of African descent around the world.
The West African country has pbaded the "Right of residence" a law that allows anyone of African descent to apply and obtain the right to remain in Ghana indefinitely.

The two, visibly excited, described the moment as historic while sharing the news with the rest of the world about how they were now legally registered.
They then expressed their gratitude to the country for granting him citizenship, as well as to other people.
They are already planning to exercise their right to vote in the presidential and legislative elections to be held in Ghana in December 2020.
In 2014, it was estimated that more than 3,000 African-Americans and people of Caribbean descent lived in Ghana.
The Diaspora Affairs Office in Ghana has accelerated the acquisition of the permanent residence of these people, which had been delayed by bureaucratic processes. It took some years for some applicants to obtain their official document when it lasted only six months.
Many have resorted to renewable residence permits and marriages with Ghanaians to stay and work effectively in the country. Rita Marley, wife of reggae legend Bob Marley, was the first person to be granted indefinite stay in Ghana in 2014, 14 years after the law was pbaded.
Meanwhile, while plastic has become a herculean threat for many countries, here in Ghana, young people are undertaking projects that turn plastic waste into fuel such as grease, diesel and petroleum for domestic use.
The project was supported by GEFSGPGhana of UNDP Ghana to launch the pilot phase of this commendable initiative.
