Axel Witsel has welcomed the return of Mats Hummels to Borussia Dortmund and says he and the former defender of Bayern Munich complement each other perfectly.
Witsel faced Hummels last season as Dortmund faced Bayern until the last day of the Bundesliga race.
After two points ahead of BVB, the Belgian international midfielder believes his new teammate, back for a second stint with the Black Yellows, will be a real badet in their new pursuit of honors in 2019 / 20.
"Hummels is a leader and the more leaders we have, the better!" Witsel told the German sports magazine, kicker. "We could see from the start his influence at the training and during our friendly matches.
"It's easy for me to play with him – he's technically very good – I can play him the ball in any situation."
Hummels, 30, won two consecutive Bundesliga titles in his previous stint at Dortmund (2008 – 2016) and has been captain of the team in his last two seasons with the club. Alongside Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard, Mateu Morey and Nico Schulz, the defending champion of the 2014 FIFA World Cup is one of five reinforcements that the Ruhr team has already made this summer.
Bayern, on the other hand, has been less active in the market. Fiete Arp, Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard are the only ones to have been recruited for the first time.
Witsel said it would "be surprised" if the record champions did not increase their ranks before the close of the window on September 2, but was confident that Dortmund could still fight against its rivals.
"We have more experience now," said the 30-year-old, who played 33 of 34 Bundesliga matches in Dortmund in his first season at Signal Iduna Park. "It's what we missed in the right back."
Watch: A reminder of how Axel Witsel ticks Dortmund
Dortmund crossed Bayern on 3 August in the German supercup. The first two teams from last season are scheduled to meet in the Bundesliga on the 11th (8-10 November) and 22 (3-6 April) matches.
Witsel have won one (3-1) and lost (5-0) in their two Bundesliga matches against Bayern so far, but are determined to tip the balance in favor of Dortmund for the new season – to more than 39, a title.
"I really want to win the Bundesliga with Dortmund," he said. "This should always be the goal of a club like this."
