A man from North Carolina died after swimming in an artificial freshwater lake in a water park after swimming in a lake, said Thursday the Department of Health and Human Services ( NCDHHS).
The unidentified individual reportedly became ill after spending the day at Fantasy Lake Water Park in Cumberland County on July 12th. Tests at disease control and prevention centers revealed that the human disease was caused by Naegleria fowleri, a unicellular living organism often found in warm freshwaters such as lakes, rivers and hot springs. The body is commonly called the cerebral amoeba and can kill if it enters the body through the nose, the NCDHHS notes.
Local officials allegedly work with the water park to inform employees about the amoeba, that it is almost impossible to eliminate freshwater lakes.
"Our sympathies go to family and loved ones," said state epidemiologist Zack Moore. "People need to know that this organism is present in the lakes, rivers and hot springs of North Carolina, so be sure to swim or practice water sports."
Between 1962 and last year, only 145 people were infected with Naegleria fowleri – North Carolina alone recorded only five cases during this period. Nevertheless, the NCDHHS indicates that residents should think twice before participating in "activities related to fresh and hot water during periods of high temperatures and low water levels".
"Avoid digging or stirring sediments while taking part in water-related activities in warm, shallow freshwater areas," added the agency.
