Bashir Umar was on patrol with other colleagues at an airport in the state of Kano, in the north of the country, when he discovered the money. He then called the phone number written on the package and returned the money to the owner.
He was promoted from an aircraft man to a corporal rank, a promotion that should have taken him 10 years, according to the Nigerian News Agency.
He also received a letter of recommendation.
The air marshal, Sadic Abubakar, told Mr. Umar, during the evening of Thursday, that he "had shown an unusual act of integrity in rendering money to the owner ".
Mr. Umar, who was attending the event with his parents, said the return of money was part of the discipline he had gained at home and in the service.
Earlier in the week, President Muhammadu Buhari urged Nigerians, "especially young people, to emulate [a] dignified gesture, "according to a statement from his spokesman.
