The Black Women Lawyers Association of New York recently celebrated its week-long retreat in Ghana, West Africa. This event, titled "Strengthening the Links and Closer to the Diaspora," hosted a large delegation from ABWA in Ghana.

One of the highlights of the visit was a blender where the ABWA team is badociated with a selection of Ghanaian lawyers at a badtail party. Organized by the Ghana Institute of International Affairs (GWAI), an ABWA partner in Ghana, the event took place at the Labadi Beach Hotel and brought together leading personalities.

"It's an honor to have been able to undertake this journey. For many ABWA members, it's a pilgrimage that connects to our heritage, "said Judge Machelle Sweeting of the New York City Civil Court.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwah, MP and a prominent member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Ghana Parliament, stressed the importance of the event as a "SANKOFA" welcome for the ABWA team. He noted that this was in line with the President's vision for "the Year of Return". "In recent decades, Ghana has rolled out many initiatives, including PANAFEST and visa-free initiatives, to boost a culture of return and belonging to Africa in the diaspora. The year of the return continues in this mold and I am excited by the success of tonight and look forward to welcoming ABWA individually in the years to come. "

"It's a pleasure to see so many lawyers at the same place and I think your trip has had as much impact as you thought." Said Sheila Minka Premo, Senior Managing Partner of Apex Lawconsult in his answer. "We are always ready to work with ABWA New York to strengthen their women's program, so feel free to contact us on your next visit to Ghana.

The evening ended with the nomination ceremony, coordinated by Ms. Abigail Nti, GhIIA administrative manager. All members of the ABWA team were given Ghanaian names to mark their return home.
