Hepatitis E should be considered a neglected tropical disease

The hepatitis E virus is a major cause of acute jaundice worldwide, with a high risk of death – up to 30% – for pregnant women.

Genotypes related to the transmission of blood and food by diseases have attracted the attention of high-income countries, but the genotypes responsible for epidemics among vulnerable populations around the world, where access to clean water and sanitation are poor, have received little attention.

For these genotypes – types 1 and 2 – there are no drugs or drugs that reduce the number of illnesses and deaths caused by hepatitis E.
