Samoura, the first female second-in-command of world football's governing body, urged the FIFA Council to "endorse the decision to expand the World Cup" at its next meeting on 23 October at Shanghai.

"FIFA is convinced that a 32-team World Cup would provide a very competitive tournament," said Samoura, Senegal.

The recent World Cup in France has gathered 24 teams and some unbalanced scores in the group stage, including the future champions of the United States beating Thailand to 13-0.

Two days before the final, FIFA President Infantino has proposed to extend the tournament to 32 nations in 2023.

Infantino has already signed an agreement for a men's World Cup with 48 teams from 2026, whose hosts will be the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Infantino said FIFA should discuss this issue "urgently".

FIFA has not yet chosen host for the 2023 Women's World Cup. The nine candidates are Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Japan. , South Africa, New Zealand and South Korea, possibly with North Korea.

Infantino said that if the extension approved "we should reopen the application process and allow everyone to have the opportunity to organize or perhaps co-organize".
