Tottenham hopes Toby Alderweireld to sign new deal after expiration of £ 25m release clause

the Daily Mirror reports that the Spurs are trying to persuade the Belgian international to make themselves understood, Alderweireld being a free agent, next June.

The former central defender of Atletico Madrid was available for £ 25m until Friday, but no club has complied with the release clause to trigger his departure.

It is still possible that Alderweireld will leave North London during the January transfer period, but the Spurs now have much more control over its immediate future.

And Mauricio Pochettino hopes to convince the defender to extend his stay among the finalists of the Champions League last season.

Alderweireld has made 165 appearances for Tottenham since joining in 2015 after a season loan in Southampton.
