Dozens of Islamist motorcycle militants and two motorized rickshaws attacked Dalori camp. Maiduguri, Borno State, Thursday, shooting people and looting food after invading a military base nearby.
"We found two corpses in the attack, which also caused several injuries," said Bello Danbatta, safety officer at the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
"The insurgents looted and burned stores in the camp and also took food to the main store where food aid is stored," he said.
Dalori, about 15 kilometers from Maiduguri, the regional capital, is home to around 50,000 people in makeshift homes.
The jihadists attacked the camp after expelling soldiers from a nearby military base during a shootout, several displaced people said.
"They (Boko Haram) chased the soldiers and burned the base before sneaking into the camp shouting" Allahu Akbar "(God is great)," said Aisa Kyarimi, a resident of the camp.
"They started shooting and we all fled the camp," said the mother of three.
Hbadan Modu, a member of the civilian militia guarding the camp, said he met the attackers while he was trying to flee.
"They were probably after looting food," he said.
Dalori camp and the nearby village have been repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram attacks by heavily armed fighters and suicide bombers.
In January 2016, at least 85 people were killed when militant fighters stormed and burned the village of Dalori and tried to access the camps.
Although the government insists that the jihadists of Boko Haram are on the verge of defeat, the attacks against civilians and troops persist nearly ten years after the beginning of the insurgency.
The conflict has claimed the lives of more than 27,000 people since 2009 and left about two million people displaced.
The jihadists have split into two and one faction affiliated with the "Islamic State" group is carrying out its own campaign of violence, targeting mainly the military.
