Apple claims that the scaled proximity sensor of the iPhone 4 has been corrected by the iOS 4.1 update. But more and more evidence shows that the proximity sensor is not fixed at all.
I have done various tests on my iPhone and the sensor just does not work for me at times. I did a test while standing in front of a mirror in a dimly lit room and found that the sensor was not working and was behaving erratically.
Meanwhile, iPhone user Ryan Bell has performed a series of comprehensive tests using Apple's iPhone configuration utility, and discovered that iOS 4.1 does not correct the sensor's proximity.
Proximity sensor problems are attributed to software bugs, displacement of the proximity sensor due to the addition of the front camera, or to greasy auditory ducts.
But now that the iOS 4.1 update has been released, we've all become Proximity Sensor beta testers for iPhone 4. Together we can use participatory solutions to test Apple's claims.
