Former police officer and speaker of the Beyond Blue Mental Health Charity, Llew O. Brien knows that it is important to fight the stigma badociated with mental health.

The hon. Member for Wide Bay, who for years worked as a traffic officer in Queensland, said that suicide was the leading cause of death among 14 to 25 year olds – the main reason he led the campaign for a new Headspace in Heritage City.

The 2015 health data reveal that the Wide Bay area had an intermediate rate of 20 suicides per 100,000 population, compared to 16 percent in the state.

These same data revealed that 75% of people who had lost their lives had not accessed health services in the last year.

Mr. O. Brien said that suicide was a health problem that transcended "so many other things" in terms of importance and severity.

"It is extremely important to raise awareness, identify and prevent mental health problems and suicide whenever we can," said Mr. O. Brien.

"Part of my role as a police officer was to talk to a lot of people at Headspace.

"You get a very good picture of the scale of the public issue, especially when a tragedy hits a small community."

Mr. O & # 39; Brien said it was the work of people like Tricia and Tasos Barounis, who tragically lost their son Yannis last year, which would save the lives of vulnerable people in the community.

The family has created a website and an application called Let him go out now, aimed at helping teens release their emotions via confidential recordings.

A motion at the NLP State Convention in Brisbane earlier this month called for a new LNP government to hold mental health education sessions for all staff and students. secondary school.

Mr. O. Brien said the motion would ensure that educators are properly trained to identify risky behaviors.

"It will help identify those who are most likely to slip through the cracks," he said.

"Many children may self-harm (and) a variety of factors that make sure that they are not properly monitored.

"So we need some kind of system that protects them."
