The minority in Parliament claimed that the government of the new patriotic party illegally paid $ 10 million to a private audit firm to investigate plans for cocoa roads.
Eric Opoku, a senior member of the Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs made this allegation at a press conference held on Thursday.
"… What the Akufo-Addo government has managed to do is waste millions of taxpayers' money on illegal audits not sanctioned by the Auditor General. We are aware that $ 10 million was donated to one of these private audit firms owned by a member of the Akufo – Addo State Council and that, when the time comes we will put the scary details at the disposal of the Ghanaian people, "he said.
The Akufo-Addo administration suspended the cocoa road projects in 2017 for an audit on corruption issues.
The Mahama administration has been accused of having pbaded more than 230 different road contracts amounting to 3.5 billion GHc under the project, to the detriment of COCOBOD's finances.
Since then, the government has lifted the suspension and indicated that funds are being provided to contractors to resume work on various projects.
At the press conference, the minority asked why "after almost three years in government, no former Mahama government officials or single contractor has been indicted for a bloated road project, fraudulent or ghost ".
The minority also warned that it should hold the CEO of COCOBOD "responsible for any financial loss in the area of cocoa production routes in the future".
COCOBOD justifies the audit
In response to the allegations, Fifi Boafo, head of communications at COCOBOD, while speaking about Eyewitness News, justified the need to audit the cocoa routes.
"For example, if a road were originally going to cost about $ 17 million, but it would be about $ 100 million and you were going into management, you would not want to just go ahead without asking any questions."
