Demonstrations in Hong Kong: protesters again challenge police ban

The protest began with a rally at Chater Garden, on the island of Hong Kong – but quickly spread to a street march.

Thousands of protesters in Hong Kong took to the streets, blocking the main roads and defying a police ban.

The protesters wore black umbrellas and waved anti-police slogans while marching through the territory's business district.

Police had allowed a rally at Chater Garden, but warned that protests outside the park were illegal.

On Saturday, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at another pro-democracy protest in Yuen Long in the north of the country.

Hong Kong has had seven consecutive weeks of anti-government and pro-democracy protests.

It is ranked as one of the safest cities in the world – but recent protests have been followed by violent clashes between protesters, police and masked men holding up sticks.

The protests were sparked by a controversial bill that would have allowed extradition to mainland China. Critics said it could be used to persecute political activists in Hong Kong.

Since then, the government has suspended the adoption of the law, but the protesters demanded its complete withdrawal, as well as an investigation into police violence and democratic reform.

They also want the head of the territory, Carrie Lam, to resign.
