KANSAS CITY, MB (AP) – A new Missouri law limits the amount and types of opioid badgesic drugs that dentists can prescribe.
The bill, signed earlier this month, asks dentists to limit opioid prescriptions to the equivalent of 10 regular Vicodin pills a day and states that they should not prescribe extended release opioids such as OxyContin.
The American Dental Association reports that dentists prescribed 6.4% of all prescriptions in the United States for opioids in 2012.
A study conducted in 2018 found that people between the ages of 16 and 25 who had been prescribed a first opioid by a dentist were about 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with opioid abuse in less than one year. year.
The Missouri Dental Association has worked with lawmakers on the language of the bill. Dan Kessler, who heads the group, told The Kansas City Star that dentists could be investigated for exceeding dosage limits.
