Thousands of people gathered to watch a 114-meter cooling tower at a disused powerhouse demolished with explosives on Sunday.
Tower six of the old coal-fired power plant of Ferrybridge & # 39; C & # 39; was destroyed by a controlled explosion during the first stage of the demolition on the site.
An exclusion zone was created before the fall of the tower on Sunday.
Four more towers of the site will be demolished in October.
The SSE electricity company closed the site, alongside the A1 (M) in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, which had been producing electricity for 50 years, in March 2016.
The company said the demolition work was part of the transition from SSE to low carbon energy, in line with the government's ambition to reduce net carbon emissions by 2050.
Charlie Cryans of SSE said, "The dismantling of this cooling tower marks the beginning of the large-scale demolition work at Ferrybridge, with work expected to continue over the next two years.
"This first demolition will serve as a pilot for a larger event scheduled for October, during which four cooling towers will be removed.
"The Ferrybridge coal plant has been producing electricity for over 50 years and, at its peak, could meet the energy needs of nearly two million people."
