Ghana Standards Authority wants to protect consumers
The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) will intensify its activities across the country to rid the Ghanaian market of substandard goods, regardless of where the products were made, the identity of the importers or manufacturers.
Increased market surveillance is part of the Authority's efforts to curb the proliferation of substandard and counterfeit goods in Ghana and to ensure a level playing field for all traders.
Low quality goods cost lives, but they are often smuggled, importers or producers pay no taxes and seriously disadvantage legally operating companies. In fact, they are misleading the government by providing much-needed revenue, harming consumers, destroying businesses, and undermining the government's efforts to create jobs.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency (GSA) said GSA is committed to protecting consumers who spend their hard-earned money on products that do not meet minimum standards.
In addition, this would prevent Ghana from being seen as a dumping ground for unjustified goods, thereby destroying Ghana's real businesses.
"The mandate of the GSA is to protect consumers while facilitating trade and we will ensure that Ghana is well served! The GSA calls on Ghanaians to cooperate with the organization to help clean up the country of poor quality products, while ensuring that punitive measures such as prosecution, naming and shaming of the guilty parties are adopted to fight against the threat.
GSA has increasingly seized a large number of substandard power cables through its operations in ports and markets and will further tighten its operations at the country's borders and ports to prevent entry into the market and the sale of substandard goods.
"We must be careful to protect ourselves by offering the best standards available at the end of the day," he said.
