The Pentecostal Church last Sunday paved the way for the construction of a new penitentiary center in Nsawam to decongest the existing building.
According to the Church, this gesture is part of the efforts of the Church to decongest the country's prisons.
The facility, known as the Nsawam Prison Camp Facility, is expected to house 300 inmates and provide a training workshop, administrative block, church and recreation facilities.
Pastor James Orhin Agyin, head of succession at Church headquarters, said the project is expected to be completed by January 28, 2020. It will then be dedicated and officially transferred to the Ghana Prison Service.
The Director General of the Ghana Prison Service, Mr. Patrick Darko Missah, thanked the Apostle Eric Nyamekye, President of the Pentecost Church, for his continued support to the prison service, noting that the new facility " is a response to the long-standing challenge of prison overcrowding in Nsawam's medium security prison. "
He added that the new facilities would therefore contribute to solving the problem of prison congestion and increasing the productivity of prison staff.
The Church of Pentecost also finances the construction of a modern detention center for the Ghana Prison Service in Ejura Nkwanta, in the Ashanti region, which, according to the Church, will be completed by the end of 2019.
Apostle Eric Nyamekye, while pronouncing a sermon in an interfaith service for inmates, in order to get rid of all the harm done by others and to prepare for a better and brighter future.
He also encouraged them to stop living in the past and embrace the future.
"You can not continue living in the past, we must live tomorrow. What happened is in the past, let's stay optimistic and plan for a better future, "he said.
