A new vicar in town

Grantchester presented Will Davenport (Tom Brittney), the new Grantchester curate, in the first episode of the season. But it's only until tonight's episode that he has a lot to do. In the third episode, Will officially took over from Sidney Chambers (James Norton), recently left. And Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) will not delay calling for help in a mysterious case.

A reluctant detective

Unlike Sidney, always eager to follow Geordie's adventures in solving crimes, Will hesitates a bit. When Geordie organizes a parsonage celebration to celebrate Will's investiture, the new vicar tells the officer that his job is to protect his flock and not to pursue the wicked. But when Geordie tells him that a child might be in danger, Will lets himself go.

A young boy (Niall Usher) appeared at the police station with clothes stained with blood. He will not speak – or can not – speak, but Geordie thinks a bloody page in the Bible could be a clue. But it's not Will's religious knowledge that ends up being useful. When he talks with the boy, he quickly realizes that he is deaf. And Will, very conveniently, knows sign language.

A quick conversation reveals the name of the boy – Adam Carter – and his place of residence. When Will and Geordie arrive at the farm, they discover a devout and obviously dysfunctional Mennonite family preparing to bury Adam's mother, Miriam. Some sharp questions from Geordie reveal that she died after falling from a barn furnace Was it an accident or was she pushing?

Cathy and Leonard face their own difficulties

Meanwhile, Geordie's wife, Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth), returned to work at the store after spending some time at home because of her nerves. Cathy has good reason to be skinny. Her colleague badaulted her in last week's episode and she is still in shock. After another frightening encounter with Anthony (Christian McKay), she finds the courage to talk to her boss, who condescendingly tells her that all this was a misunderstanding, probably her fault, and that she should forget everything.

It's heartbreaking to see Cathy struggling, especially since she can not explain what's bothering her about her husband, either because she blames herself for what happened, or maybe because she fears it. that Geordie could do if he learned the attack. (Although we are honest, it would be quite satisfying to see Geordie get a good punch on Anthony's ample face.)

Poor Leonard (Al Weaver) is struggling with his own problems in this episode. After Mrs. Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones) caught the priest and his boyfriend kissing, the atmosphere in the manse became cold. He is afraid to report him to the bishop or, worse, to the police, which could destroy his career and possibly send him to jail. What he did not expect was that she quit her job as a housekeeper, a decision that hurt Leonard in a different way.

"What will I do without my friend?" Asks Leonard. She does not answer. Mrs. Chapman's reaction to Leonard's homobaduality is not surprising (we know she is deeply conservative and does not like change), but it would be nice to see her eventually able to open up and accept Leonard for who he is. We will have to wait to see if this is the last time we will see the good maid or if she will eventually find her way to the presbytery (the chances are equal for the latter).

A mystery solved

Back at the farm, Geordie and Will finally find out who killed Miriam. It was the grandmother, who was fed up with her abusive and controlling ways, especially the way she was picking on Adam, whose deafness she took as a sign of the devil.

Throughout this episode, Will has trouble controlling his emotions. In one scene, Adam's father goes wild for not protecting his son and in another, he develops his frustration on a punching bag. His reaction to the abuses he witnessed is telling and suggests that there is something dark in the past of the vicar, who is generally optimistic. It's very likely that we would learn more about this – and the mysterious girl who would have taught her sign language – at the episode of next week, where Geordie will discover that Will grew up in "a house filled with secrets and lies, "according to the description of the episode of PBS.

The next episode of Grantchester will be released Sunday, August 4 at 9 / 8c.
