The Chinese liaison body in Hong Kong has scheduled a rare press conference to talk about anti-extradition protests in the Special Administrative Region, or RS in the south of the country. Last weekend, dozens of protesters were arrested.
Street demonstrations against a new measure allowing Hong Kong's extraditions to China have been going on for weeks, starting in early June. They became unusually violent.
These demonstrations are the most important since the return of the former British colony in China in 1997.
On Monday afternoon, the Hong Kong and Macao Business Office is scheduled to hold a press conference.
The United States Chamber of Commerce, Am Cham, today called on Hong Kong leaders to address grievances and restore stability. Hong Kong is an international financial center whose stock market is open at the beginning of the week.
Chinese authorities have suspended the issue of extradition that triggered the protests. However, protesters broadened their call for the protection and promotion of democracy in Hong Kong before the expiration of its 50-year SAR status in 2047.
