Taycan Porsche reservations exceed 30,000 before world premiere – TechCrunch

Porsche more than a month before the German automaker unveiled 100% electric sports cars, suggesting that demand is sufficient to support the company's project to produce 40,000 units in the first year.

The most recent booking figures were quoted by Andreas Haffner, head of the HR division of Bloomberg and Porsche HR, in an interview with German business magazine Handelsblatt.

Porsche initially targeted 20,000 Taycan electric vehicles for the first year of production. But the interest in the vehicle prompted the automaker to double its expected annual production to 40,000 units in its first year. Reservations require a deposit of € 2,500 ($ 2,785).

If Porsche manages to produce and deliver 40,000 Taycans in its first year of production, the electric sports car will overtake some of its iconic internal combustion models, including the 718 Boxster and 911. Porsche has sold 35,573,911 and 24 750,718 vehicles globally in 2018.

The Taycan still trailed behind Porsche's other popular crossovers and SUVs, such as the Cayenne and Macan.

The Taycan could also put pressure on the Tesla Model S, the popular luxury electric sedan that has long dominated this industry niche. Tesla combines the S and X model delivery numbers. In 2018, the company delivered 99,394 S and X model vehicles.

Model S has been updated extensively since production began in 2012, but has not undergone a significant transformation since April 2016, when the fascia was modified to look more like Model X.

Tesla president Elon Musk said earlier this month that the company was not planning to "refresh" its X or S model vehicles. In automotive language, discounting usually means small changes to a model vehicle that go beyond the annual updates made by the manufacturers. An update is not a major overhaul, although the vehicle model has often changed.

The company will make minor changes to the luxury electric sedan and sport utility vehicle, Musk said at the time. Even with these ongoing updates, potential customers could opt for the newer Taycan.

Porsche is not resting on the novelty of its first electric vehicle capable of generating sales. The company is rolling out other incentives, including plans to give Taycan owners three years of free recharge at hundreds of Electrify America public stations across the United States. Electrify America is the entity created by Volkswagen as part of its agreement with US regulators following its diesel emission fraud scandal.

The automaker is also investing an additional $ 70 million in adding DC fast chargers to Porsche dealerships.
