The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released provisional results for those who participated in the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) 2019.
The review body stated in a statement that "the full results of 48 855 (14.12%) candidates have been disclosed pending the completion of investigations into various cases of examination-related fraud detected during and after the examination ".
Alleged misconduct includes the presentation of foreign documents such as prepared notes, printed matter and cell phones in the examination room, collusion among candidates, planned deception that occurred with the connivance of certain supervisors and school authorities .
"The results retained by the candidates can be canceled or published according to the results of the surveys," the statement added.
The Council will send the results to schools and applicants are invited to contact their school heads to get their results.
Meanwhile, WAEC has also hosted the results online and applicants who wish can access their results on its website.
Improvement of the results of the main subjects
WAEC indicated that "provisional results indicate that there have been improvements in the performance of candidates from A1 to C6 in all major subjects".
Basic mathematics recorded the most significant improvement in performance from A1 to C6 compared to that of 208 (38.33 to 65.31%).
There was also a notable improvement in integrated science (50.52% to 63.17%), with the English language showing a slight improvement from 46.91% to 48.96%.
Social studies also showed a slight improvement from 46.91% to 48.96%.
Breakdown of results
The performance of the candidates in the four main subjects is as follows:
- English language: 167,733 (96%) got A1-C6; 100 781 (29.42%) obtained D7-E8 while 74,038 (21.61%) had F9;
- Mathematics (Core): 223,737 (31%) got A1-C6; 72,408 (21%) obtained D7-E8 while 46384 (13.54%) had F9;
- Integrated Science: 216,095 (63.17%) got A1-C6; 91 151 (27%) obtained D7-E8 while 34,825 (10.18%) had F9;
- Social studies: 257.838 (75.43%) got A1-C6; 52,983 (15.50%) obtained D7-E8 while 30,970 (9.06%) had F9.
Warning
The Council called on members of the public, particularly candidates, to be wary of impostors, who promise to change the results of the exam for a fee.
"Candidates should note that all WAEC results are secure and can be authenticated. People whose results are counterfeit will be exposed, "warned WAEC.
A total of 346,094 candidates participated in the exams across the country.
This figure is 9.2% higher than the 2018 candidacy, which was 316,999.
The entry figure was 170 857 (49.37%) men and 175 237 (50.63%) women.
The examination was conducted in 987 participating schools.
A total of 2,322 (0.67%) of the registered candidates were absent from the examination.
