US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Patricia Pelosi praised Ghana's vital role in ensuring peace and security in other parts of the world, particularly in Africa.

"We congratulate you for the strength of your role as an exporter of peace and security on this continent, as well as for the maintenance of peace on the African continent and in other parts of the world," she said.

Ms. Pelosi, accompanied by members of the US Congressional Black Caucus who are making a three-day visit to Ghana, said the following during a courtesy visit of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to Jubilee House in Accra.

She added that the United States admired Ghana's military, political and cultural advancement.

Ms. Pelosi, who is in her 17th year as a Congressman representing the 12th Congressional District of California, has traced the history of the slave trade and said that the future of the United States and the United States Ghana was now guided by freedom, justice and democracy.

Mr. Jim Clyburn, Chief Whip of the US Congress, said the collaboration with Ghana should focus on trade rather than aid, stressing that the future of both countries should be based on the mutual respect.

President Akufo-Addo called the congressman's visit a symbol of dynamic relations between the United States and Ghana. He claimed that it was also a sign of comfort and an act of solidarity.

The president said Ghana is looking for a more progressive partnership with the United States, allowing Ghanaian and US companies to partner to advance trade between the two countries.

He hoped that such collaboration would also lead to increased investment by US companies in Ghana to reduce the country 's dependence on the generosity of US taxpayers.

"We think it will be a healthier and more productive relationship," he added.

President Akufo-Addo praised the US government for its support in the areas of education, defense, health and the electoral system of Ghana over the years.

Democracy

He said that Ghana boasted of being a functional democracy, reached after long years of struggles by military regimes.

However, he said that since the creation of the Fourth Republic, Ghanaians have fully devoted themselves to a democracy based in particular on the principles of responsibility, respect for human rights, the rule of law.

President Akufo-Addo described Ghana's relations with the United States as multifaceted, starting with the tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade, culminating in a common agenda of democratic governance.

He said the two countries wanted to build a world where respect for human rights would be the order of the international commitments.
