Most of the confirmed cases occurred in Abidjan, the country's economic capital, the ministry said in a statement.

He recommended that any unvaccinated person be vaccinated against yellow fever.

"The epidemic is occurring in the context of a dengue epidemic," the ministry said, adding that dengue fever and yellow fever were viral diseases transmitted by the same mosquito.

"The vector control measures that have been put in place to fight dengue are also effective in the yellow fever epidemic."

In early June, 130 cases of dengue fever were reported, including two deaths, with the authorities launching a major campaign against mosquitoes.

Abidjan crosses the end of the rainy season, which favors mosquito breeding.

Symptoms of yellow fever, including high fever, vomiting, and muscle aches, usually manifest themselves three to six days after a person has been bitten by an infected mosquito.

Infection with yellow fever is usually mild, but in some cases can be life-threatening and lead to kidney and liver failure.

Yellow fever only occurs in parts of South America and Africa.
