Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta said on Monday that the government has begun negotiations with prospective landowners to buy 65.5 acres of land in Ayidan, Ga South Township, to develop a new site. Mechanized disposal for Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.

"As part of Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Project; 22,500 domestic toilets, benefiting 180,000 low-income beneficiaries, and 260 sanitation facilities serving 200,000 students, have been completed.

"The construction of a high-capacity rainwater collector at Kaneshie First Light to address perineal floods in the region is also underway," he said.

The finance minister added that the ministry had launched various processes for the construction of 2,000 additional toilets for households as well as 25 institutional toilets with 12 places for various public institutions across the country.

Mr. Ofori-Atta said that, to enforce sanitation regulations across the country, MMDAs were deploying sanitation officers in their jurisdiction to control sanitation violations, adding that guards had been inaugurated at the Kpong and Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

He said that the Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation has awarded contracts for the construction of 750 boreholes and 50 limited mechanized projects for some rural communities in the country.

"Funding has been secured for the implementation of the Yendi Water Supply Project, which will serve 133,000 people in Yendi Municipality and beyond," he said.

In addition, the government has approved the construction of the water supply project of Tamale and Damango, which is expected to produce 30 million gallons of water a day to serve Yapei in Damango and surrounding communities.
