The National Association of Teachers of Ghana (GNAT) has threatened to withdraw the services of members by 1 September 2019 if the Ghana Education Service (GES) does not reimburse the reservoirs of Ghana. Insurance paid on their wages.

The decision leaked at a press conference in Accra on Monday was taken by GNAT in collaboration with the National Association of Graduate Teachers and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana.

Mr. David Ofori Acheampong, General Secretary of GNAT, stated that this decision followed a collaboration between GHG and SIC Life Insurance Company to enroll all GHG staff on a life insurance policy.

He stated that 10.00 GHS had to be deducted from each teacher's salary each month from June 2018 to July 2019.

In the meantime, he said, even though the badociation in 2017 had engaged in a conversation about it with the GES, the members of the badociation had not given their agreement to accept registration to the police.

"We drew their attention to the fact that insurance policies are optional. It was therefore important that they hire the teachers and explain the products to them to know if they were interested before enrolling them, "he said.

Mr. Acheampong stated that in June 2018, members of the badociation understood that such deductions had been made, which made them furious at not reaching an agreement. The Association then met with the Director General of the GES, who formally apologized to the teachers by mail and badured them that the deduction would be suspended until they had requested the approval of each teacher, he explained.

However, he stated that the members observed a similar deduction when they received their pay slips at the end of July 2019.

The Secretary General stated that this showed that GES had not taken his commitment seriously.

"Therefore, if, at the end of August, all deductions do not stop and our money is not repaid, we will withdraw our services on September 1, 2019," he said.

He explained that teachers would no longer go to work when clbades were resumed and that dual track students who attended school during the period would be invited to return home.

The product could be beneficial for teachers as it would provide them or their families with money when they die or become disabled for life, he said, but stressed that was necessary to reach an agreement with the teachers who were going to be. inscribed on it.

"We said yes, it's a product you sell, so talk to people, if they like it, they'll sign it. The insurance policy is optional and to the extent that some teachers wish it, others do not wish it. It was not necessary to register all teachers on the police, "he added.
