Nancy Pelosi, President of the United States Congress
US Congress President Nancy Pelosi called on her government and the government of Ghana to do justice to their citizens.
Ms. Pelosi defined justice as the foundation of hope, adding, "We must make sure that every person, especially young people, has hope and a future."
To realize that hope and create a future, the President of the United States told the Ghanaian Parliament on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, that the two governments "must boldly pursue economic justice," adding that "we must be firmly resolved to economic progress ".
"Together, our governments must continue to support smart development strategies that spur sustainable economic growth and raise all families in Ghana and throughout Africa," said Ms. Pelosi, the first woman president of the US Congress.
Pelosi added that the governments of Ghana and the United States should work together to create educational and economic opportunities for every student and worker to move up the ladder of opportunity, and "we need to focus on women and girls. In America, we say, "When women succeed, America succeeds," and I am sure that in Ghana too, when women succeed, Ghana succeeds.
Regarding justice in the delivery of health care, Ms. Pelosi said the two countries must ensure that its citizens can have equal access to basic health care.
"We must strive to eradicate diseases. We can not accept a world in which we are born, determine whether we have access to quality and affordable health care services; people need to live healthy and fulfilling lives. Health care is for us a right for all, not for the privileged, "she said.
Ms. Pelosi also mentioned that Ghana and the United States needed to achieve environmental justice so that all children, regardless of age, could breathe clean air and drink clean water because environmental problems are health problems.
Ms. Pelosi was in the country for a four-day official visit. She was accompanied by the black caucus of the US Congress. Their visit is part of the government's campaign for the year of return.
Ms. Pelosi and her team are expected to leave for the United States today.
