President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu
The leadership of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has described as "appalling, cumbersome and insensitive" the mandatory deductions of the GHS10 on teacher salaries by the Ghana Education Service as an insurance premium.
NAGRAT, Wednesday, July 31, 2019, threatened to strike if the GHG maintained the deductions.
Addressing reporters at a press conference, NAGRAT President, Mr. Angel Cabonu, said: "NAGRAT is appalled by the insensitive and cumbersome approach that the Ghana Education Service leadership takes on the record of GES SIC's Life Policy.
"Their inflexible desire on the part of leaders to impose an insurance policy on staff without taking their concerns raises suspicion about the true intentions of the police.
"Even though teacher unions have made it clear that such a policy should be optional for teachers interested in applying, the GES management thinks otherwise. According to NAGRAT, the mandatory deduction of bonuses from teachers who have not applied for this policy is an attempt to intimidate teachers.
"We call on GES to immediately stop the illegal deduction and repay all the money by the end of August. If GES ignores this advice, teachers will withdraw their services from 1 September 2019, "he warned.
The Government of Ghana introduced the GES-SIC Life policy in 2018 for GHG staff.
Beneficiaries have the right to receive between 9,000 and 18,000 GHS when they are suffering from cancer, heart attack, kidney failure, loss. from sight, from a stroke and from a permanent disability.
