In the latest installment on the phenomenon of "viral crazes gone awry", two Chinese teenagers went into intensive care after participating in the truly devilish "One Thousand Squats" challenge.

What began as an innocent competition between two friends had a very serious impact on Tang and his then 19-year-old friend who clashed in Chongqing, China.

The teens took turns squatting at a time by video call and their obstinacy quickly led them to accumulate impressive numbers. "We did not want to lose both and so we kept trying to fight, which allowed us to finish 1,000 squats," Tang told China Press.

As disconcerting as it may seem, doing 1,000 squats as a result has become a trend for fitness fans and videos of people trying to rise to the challenge have generated millions of views on Youtube.

The teenager felt a bit bad as a result of this exhausting session, but she managed to get to work normally the next day. It was only the next morning that the real impact of the workout hit her and she realized that something was wrong at all.

"First of all, not only was my leg painful, but I could not bend it," she says. "Then I went to the bathroom and found that [my] the urine was brown.

Tang's boyfriend took her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition in which the kidneys can not handle all the waste floating in the blood because of rapid muscle breakdown. The disease can cause serious kidney damage and can even be fatal.

Fortunately for Tang, the doctors managed to rehydrate her with a drip and she was released once her condition had clarified. A phone call to her friend revealed that she had also been hospitalized as a result of the workout, stressing how seriously the girls were about to be damaged.
